Welcome to Oglethorpe University Men’s Tennis. We are looking for dedicated young men who want to continue their tennis careers in an academically challenging and athletically competitive environment. We have a newly renovated tennis center with 6 beautiful courts (3 lighted) and plans for future improvements.

We participate at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The SCAC is recognized as one of the top athletic and academic conferences in any division of the NCAA. The SCAC usually has three to four teams place nationally in the top twenty NCAA Division III rankings. Six Conference Teams (including us!) were ranked in their respective D-III Region.

Our Men’s Team had another solid season in 2008 with a record of 12-6 and being regionally ranked for the third consecutive year in the Atlantic South Region (#16). We finished 5th in the SCAC for our highest Conference finish since 1991. Jr Luka Cerenko (12-2) was sixth in voting for SCAC “Player of the Year” and made both the All -Conference team and the All –Tournament Team. Fr. Felix Mann was selected All-Conference (12-5). Luka and Felix made the All-tournament team in doubles as did Ross Beall and Brick Faucette.  Our other 2008 freshmen Ross Beall and Alex Lindburg also made great contributions to the team. Sr Capt Brick Faucette will be missed for his leadership and holding down the #1 singles spot.

In 2009 with the additions of transfer jr. Scott McRee, Marietta, GA, and Fr. Bryan Bailey, Hebron, KY,  to our squad, we look to be a solid team and will build on the progress made last year. Sr.  Gabe Henderson, Albertville, AL, returns for his fourth season and give us great depth. Sr. Luka Cerenko, Atlanta, GA, made the quarters of the ITA Championships this fall. Felix Man, Herndon, VA, upset the #3 seed in the same tournament. He, Scott, and Luka will battle for the top half of the line-up. Ross Beall, Roswell, GA, Bryan Bailey and Gabe Henderson will give us excellent depth.  Sophomore Lawrence Sweatman, Memphis, TN, has greatly improved and will challenge for a playing spot along with juniors  Brad White, Cartersville, GA, and Joey Kosciolek, Lawrenceville, GA. Srs. Carlos Carthen, Fairburn, GA, and Ricky Pomales, Paterson, NJ, continue to improve.

We should be solid and competitive. We have a great schedule starting with #2 nationally ranked Emory.  We also have 3 SCAC Conference matches at home vs. Millsaps, Birmingham Southern and Southwestern. We will play 8 conference opponents this year. Baring injury, we look to have another fine season and hope to move up in this very difficult tennis conference.

I have over 35 years of tennis teaching/coaching experience, having worked with over 10 former All-Americans during my career. As a player, I was ranked #5 nationally by the USTA for 6 years, and have been selected GA. Pro of the Year four times, and Sr. Player of the Year twice. I was recently inducted into the GA. Professional Tennis Hall of Fame. I was MVP and Captain of my Vanderbilt Team in 1970-71. My men’s regular season record is 55-32 over the past 5 years. I am determined to continue the progress the team made this past year, by recruiting players who really enjoy playing. The immediate goal is winning in the tough SCAC Conference. In order to achieve this goal, I need players like you!

Sincerely,

Peter Howell
