Women's Letter

Welcome to Oglethorpe University Women’s Tennis. We are looking for dedicated young women who want to continue their tennis careers in an academically challenging and athletically competitive environment. We have a newly renovated tennis center with 6 beautiful courts (3 lighted) and plans for future improvements.

We participate at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The SCAC is recognized as one of the top athletic and academic conferences in any division of the NCAA. The SCAC usually has three to four teams place nationally in the top twenty NCAA Division III rankings. Six Conference Teams were ranked in their respective D-III Region.

Our Women’s Team showed great progress in 2008. We started the year challenged to improve on last year’s record. This team led by four seniors showed great heart and determination. We finished with a record of 7-12 against a very tough schedule.  Seniors Jamie Dillon and Ashley Cooper made the All- Tournament Team by going undefeated in the conference Championships. We finished 10th in the Conference but lost two very close matches.

We have added 4 new players for 2009 and will be a very young team with no seniors.  Jr. Captain Kimberley O’Dell, Peachtree City, GA, returns for her third season and will give us great leadership. Transfer junior Sarah Britt, Grayson, GA, and freshman Jaymie Danielson, Rainbow City, AL, will be counted on at the top of the line-up. Freshmen Lauren Heusel, McDonough, GA, and Sarah Duff, Braselton, GA, will give us added depth.  Sophomore Molly Colvard, Chickamauga, GA, will again probably hold down the #3 spot.  Jr. Ali Burt, Spring, TX, is counted on to challenge the middle of the line-up after her fine volleyball season. Sophomores LaDonna Barnes, Kingston, NY, and Kayla Atkins, Acworth, GA, will push everyone for playing positions. We play a very tough schedule against 3 nationally ranked and 4 regionally ranked teams and will need to get competitive in a hurry!

I have over 35 years of tennis teaching/coaching experience, having worked with over 10 former All-Americans during my career. As a player, I was ranked #5 nationally by the USTA for 6 years, and have been selected GA. Pro of the Year four times, and Sr. Player of the Year twice. I was recently inducted into the GA. Professional Tennis Hall of Fame. I was MVP and Captain of my Vanderbilt Team in 1970-71. My men’s regular season record is 55-32 and women’s is 49- 33 over the past 5 years. I am determined to continue the progress the teams made this past year, by recruiting players who really enjoy playing. The immediate goal is winning in the tough SCAC Conference. In order to achieve this goal, I need players like you!

Sincerely,

Peter Howell
