Oglethorpe's Substance Free Living Community, located in
Dempsey Hall, is designed for students who have an interest in
adopting a substance free lifestyle. Residents in this area make a
commitment to their roommates and floor mates that they and their
guests will refrain from the use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal
drugs while on the floor. Residents must further agree that, should
they consume alcohol or other substances while away from their hall,
they will not return to their room in a state of intoxication. The
goal is to create cooperative living environment that promotes a
substance free lifestyle. Floor mates will be encouraged to share
time together in a range of voluntary social and recreational
activities and programs. Programs will emphasize having an enjoyable
and successful university experience without the use of substances.
Rule Enforcement
In order to ensure cooperation, residents in this community will
sign a contract explicitly stating that they will live a completely
substance free lifestyle within the building and that they will not
return to the building in a state that might be disruptive to the
substance free environment. They further commit to making an attempt
to participate in one program per semester and assisting with
community activities.
Application Procedure
Students from all classes are encouraged to apply for substance free
housing. Students who wish to live in this community will select
their rooms before the general room selection process. The only
requirement for selection is that all persons who live in substance
free housing, including roommates and suitemates, agree to the terms
of substance free living. First-year students may designate their
interest in the Substance Free Living Community on their Housing
Application.
