You can help protect yourself and your possessions by maintaining a
high level of awareness of your immediate surroundings and the
people within your environment. Keeping a mental record of what goes
on around you can increase your chances of perceiving a crime or
accident before it occurs and preventing it or giving security
officers a detailed description of what took place. With this in
mind, consider the following suggestions related to crime
prevention.
- Most crimes at Oglethorpe are thefts of unattended items.
Keep track of your keys and belongings, and lock the doors to your
room and car.
- Use an engraver to mark your social security number or
driver's license number on electronics or other items of value.
- Be alert for strangers wandering around campus buildings or
residence halls after-hours. A common tactic is for thieves
to say that they are looking for a friend.
- After dark, walk or drive with others and avoid dark alleys,
short cuts, and vacant lots.
- When walking or jogging alone, refrain from using a music
playing device that distracts you from observing your
surroundings.
- If you realize or suspect that you are being followed, stay in
a lighted area, proceed to a lighted public place, and call
security for help.
- Keep your purse or wallet close to your body. Regularly check
your purse or wallet and make sure it fastens securely.
- Carry a cellular-phone in the car or on your person. It is the
fastest way to get help in an emergency.
- Lock your doors when you drive. If possible, keep windows when
moving through a high crime area.
- Have your keys in your hand when you approach your car. Check
the floor and back seat before getting in.
- Consistently park in well-lit areas, as close as possible to
the building you are visiting.
- Never pick up hitch-hikers.
- If you have a peep-hole in your door, use it. If you do not
have one, install it and use it.
- Request an ID from any "official looking" person who wants to
come into your room. This includes the police. When in
doubt, call Campus Safety before opening your door.
- Never let strangers into your room. If a stranger wants to use
your phone, offer to make the call for them.
- Do not reveal your number or any personal information (name,
age, sex, etc.) to a wrong number caller. Ask what number they
dialed and suggest they try again. Do not let them know if you are
alone. Hang up on obscene callers.
- Report unauthorized persons or suspicious behavior to the
police immediately. If you find your residence burglarized don't
go in, call the police.
- If someone breaks into your residence call police and get out
if possible. Do not make it obvious to others if you are not in.
Have a neighbor pick up your mail.
- Take security measures seriously for you and the protection of
others.
