The title ‘Liberal Arts College’ often sends science majors looking elsewhere. Not so, for Kendall Gault ’10. “I made the decision to attend Oglethorpe University based on many factors. These include the uniquely diverse student body, the sense of community felt among the students and faculty, the perfect size of the institution and the ideal location near a city full of opportunities for eager and dedicated students.”
Kendall knew that she wanted to attend college as a chemistry major with a pre-med focus since her sophomore year of high school, and hasn’t wavered. Currently, she is planning on attending medical school with the goal of obtaining certification to perform public service as a forensic pathologist for state government agencies.
“I hope to eventually hold a position as a Chief Medical Examiner,” she says, her excitement tangible as she talks about her unconventional future career. “Through Oglethorpe University, I was able to participate in an internship at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Louisville, Ky. which has been an incredible educational experience. I hope to someday make valuable contributions, both medical and legal, in the field of death investigation.” With an eternally bubbly personality, Kendall is an exercise in not judging a book by its cover.
She currently serves as President of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed service fraternity, and as a result, she says, “I have become more aware of the tragedies and challenges experienced by our community and have experienced a new level of compassion as well as practiced communication skills which will be incredibly useful in allowing me to connect on a more personal level with the individuals I will encounter in my future.”
Additionally, Kendall serves on the Oglethorpe University Honor Council. She says, “Being involved with the Honor Council has given me exposure to the concept of criminal justice and a surprisingly optimistic new view of my generation. I’ve learned a greater appreciation for my peers after witnessing the seriousness and honesty with which our student body considers the Oglethorpe University Honor Code.”
Kendall is also a participating member of Phi Delta Epsilon, an international medical fraternity.
“My experience as a student at Oglethorpe University, thus far, has been pleasing on so many levels,” said Kendall. “I feel like I have been challenged and adequately prepared to tackle the remainder of my education and enter my career with the intelligence and confidence necessary to become a successful contributor to society.”
