This past spring, students got up early one morning and lined up outside the Emerson Student Center to ensure their spot in Oglethorpe’s new residence hall, scheduled to open August 27, 2005. Their wait is almost over.

The new $10 million, four-story, 164-bed facility features Oglethorpe’s Collegiate Gothic style with a traditional granite façade, which matches the “Silent Faculty” of the academic buildings on campus.

Each suite includes four private bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and kitchen area. The introduction of individual bedrooms follows a national trend of building to better meet the needs of today’s students. The fourth floor features loft-style suites while each floor will include a “common area” space such study room, a game room or meeting space.

“Internal research and outside ‘best practices’ indicate that students who live on campus, particularly as underclassmen, are more successful overall,” says Timothy Doyle, dean of students and vice president for student affairs. With the completion of the new residence halls, Oglethorpe will require freshmen and sophomores to live on-campus unless they live at home with their parents, enhancing the residential environment and improving the Oglethorpe experience.
