Junior Rachael Maddux can usually be found in the basement of
Emerson Student Center, on the second floor of the Philip
Weltner Library or chatting with her Honors Seminar. When she’s
not crocheting.
Rachael, co-editor of The Stormy Petrel, Oglethorpe’s student
newspaper, spends many a night in the basement office working
with section editors on articles and layouts. Being on the paper
staff allows her to keep up with Oglethorpe news while learning
more about the campus community, including the new Writing
Center on the library’s second floor where Rachael tutors. She
enjoys the chance to make a difference on campus by helping
others improve their writing.
Rachael will delve into the world of pop culture fan groups
this year. That’s what she hopes to research for her Honors
thesis. Dr. Stephen Herschler, director of the Honors Program,
meets regularly with the juniors in the program to discuss
topics academic and personal during Honors Seminar.
When she’s not working on the newspaper, at the tutor center
or on her Honors project, you might find Rachael crocheting.
While at home in Chattanooga over winter break of her freshman
year, Rachael founded Madeye Designs, selling her crochet hats
and scarves as an entrepreneurial hobby. “It’s worked out pretty
well,” Rachael said. “I can do it at my own pace.”
Rachael has set her own pace while at Oglethorpe, too:
hectic. She has an independently planned major in Media Rhetoric
and Culture Studies in addition to her extracurricular
activities, which also include contributing to The Tower,
Oglethorpe’s literary magazine.
“If you’re self-motivated, Oglethorpe is a great place,” she
said. “After all, what’s the point of having an attentive staff
if you don’t take advantage of everything they have to offer?”
