Mike Boosel began Oglethorpe’s certified financial planner program upon the recommendation of a few of its instructors. They also happen to be his coworkers at Robert W. Baird and Company.
“I’ve been in the financial services industry for 16 years,” he said. Becoming a certified financial planner “is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”
Mike has focused on investments during his career, though he has done some estate and tax planning as well as retirement consulting.
“I fully expected to go into class and know the material, but that hasn’t been the case. I’ve been able to put new knowledge into practice every single day,” he said a month before finishing the program. “The investment class was probably the best class I took, though I learned a lot from the other classes, too.”
The keys to success in financial planning, according to Mike, are a strong knowledge and expertise base and real-world experience. “I think [becoming a CFP] builds a foundation of knowledge. People in our field need to have knowledge in all areas.”
“A big benefit is getting to know other people from a variety of backgrounds,” Mike said of the program held on Oglethorpe’s Peachtree Road campus. “The instructors have been excellent. The most challenging part of the program is balancing coursework with your day-to-day job and family. By offering courses two nights a week, I can juggle my schedule appropriately. If I’ve got a meeting on Tuesday, I can go to that week’s class on Thursday.”
