Two hours before she heads to the airport for a six-month study abroad experience in Spain, Shanequa Shuler ’07 is waving to everyone passing through the academic quad. It’s not a wave like you’d get from the grand marshal of a parade; it’s a wave you’d give a neighbor you’ve known for years.

Shanequa is waving to neighbors – her Oglethorpe friends, faculty and co-workers. Since coming to Oglethorpe, she has worked with the admission staff (now heading to the library for a reception), residence life (the housing director is picking up campus mail) and students (including one from Mexico and another who just returned from Spain).

Sitting outside for an interview in late January, she can hardly contain her excitement about Madrid. “I hope their school is as beautiful as Oglethorpe,” she says, glancing down the quad to Weltner Library.

“Knowing another language is really necessary in today’s workforce,” explains the Spanish and politics double major. “I want to help a wide range of people as a lawyer. Spanish-speakers will soon be the majority in this country, so it’s an important quality to have in business. Plus, Spanish is fun!”

Thinking back on her campus activities, Shanequa points to her ODK induction ceremony and working with admission as highlights.

“I’ve loved working with the admission staff. Everyone is so nice. They really care a lot about the students,” she says. “There’s nothing like being an RA and having people on your hall who you helped bring in. You can make sure they stay on the right track. I was really blessed to be able to work with the admission and student affairs staffs.”

One of Shanequa’s favorite classes was on Eva Peron and Che Guevara. “It was hard, but so good,” she remembers. “You could tell [Associate Professor of Spanish] Dr. Plotnik was so passionate about it. I can’t remember ever going that in-depth on any subject matter.”

When she returns to the states, Shanequa will apply to law schools for fall 2008 admission. She looks forward to a long career as in entertainment law, but will never forget her days at Oglethorpe.
