The Safe Outlet program aims to create a visible network of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex (LGBTQQI) individuals and their allies by providing an avenue through which any member of the Oglethorpe University community can show their support. By displaying the Safe Outlet sign, Safe Outlet members signify a space is safe to discuss LGBTQQI issues. Safe Outlet extends the physical safe space for LGBTQQI students and their allies throughout the campus. This program also creates ongoing educational experiences between Safe Outlet members and the OU community, encouraging students, faculty and
staff to explore cultural identities, values and stereotypes in order to better understand how these issues impact the greater community.
The goal of OU’s Safe Outlet program is to provide a network of students, staff, and faculty committed to providing support to LGBTQQI individuals and their allies at OU and beyond.
Additionally, the Safe Outlet program aims to:
1 - Identify and mobilize a network of people who are empathetic and knowledge about LGBTQQI issues and concerns. The Safe Outlet training will emphasize knowledge about campus and community resources as well as counseling/helping skills.
2 - To provide evidence of LGBTQQI support by displaying a sign as a visible symbol of personal commitment.
3 - To reduce the fear and discrimination of LGBTQQI persons within the OU community.
Oglethorpe University faculty, staff, and students interested in becoming a member of Safe Outlet must attend a three-hour training lead by trained facilitators which includes: an overview of the purpose of Safe Outlet, information on issues that LGBTQQI students may be facing, information on further resources and how to make referrals, activities to apply information learned, and an opportunity to sign a Safe Outlet contract (which is an agreement to provide a “safe space” for anyone dealing with sexual or gender orientation issues, emphasizing the expectations and responsibilities of being an ally).
Safe Outlet trainings are offered throughout the academic year. To ensure an engaging and developmental experience, each training is limited to no more than 15 participants. Safe Outlet trainings often fill up fast and may have a wait list so it is very important for you to contact us if for any reason your plans change and you can no longer make the date for which you are registered. Therefore, and most importantly, you must be registered to attend. To register, please complete the Safe Outlet LGBTQQIA Training Registration Form!
