CITATION
Warren Yancey Jobe
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa
May 9, 2009
Warren Yancey Jobe – Chairman of the Oglethorpe University Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2005, Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of Georgia Power Company, Senior Vice President of Southern Company, and board member of numerous corporate and community service organizations – your leadership, past and present, in business, philanthropy and academia epitomizes the Oglethorpe mission: Make a life. Make a living. Make a Difference.
You began work at Southern Company in 1971 as manager of the tax department and worked at Southern Company and its subsidiary, Georgia Power, for thirty years, ascending to the top ranks of management at both Georgia Power and Southern Company. You retired from Southern Company in 2001 and now serve on the boards of two New York Stock Exchange companies – UniSource Energy, and Wellpoint, Inc. – as well as Ridgeworth Funds.
You have translated your career success into a platform for the benefit of others by creating the Georgia Power Foundation in 1987 and serving as its President until your retirement in 2001. Your time outside of the office has been dedicated to ‘giving back’ to your community by serving as President of the Atlanta Rotary Club, Chairman of the Board of the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta and on the boards of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, The Carter Center, and Hands on Atlanta. You have chaired major capital campaigns for Hospice Atlanta, the Piedmont Park Conservancy and the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta. And you continue to live Georgia Power’s mission to be “A Citizen Wherever We Serve,” through positions on the boards of the Tull Charitable Foundation, the PATH Foundation and the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse.
In addition to your involvement and support of community service organizations, your contributions to education have been extraordinary. Your 22 years of continuing service and leadership on the Oglethorpe University Board of Trustees has resulted in significant improvements to campus facilities including the Pinholster Court in Dorough Field House, the renovated Lupton Auditorium, and two new state of the art Residence Halls.
In recognition of your achievements in business, community service, philanthropic and academic spheres, I present, with the endorsement of the Oglethorpe University faculty and the Board of Trustees, Warren Yancey Jobe for the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
