Dear Degree Candidate and Family Members:
Commencement is rapidly approaching, and I would like to bring the following information to your attention.
If you have not already done so, I urge you to make hotel reservations, if needed.
A question frequently asked is “do my family and guests need tickets to attend?” If the weather is good, there will be plenty of seats on the Academic Quadrangle for all guests. In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held in Dorough Field House where there is limited eating. Each graduation candidate will be issued seven guest tickets.
The Alumni Association has employed the services of a professional photographer who will be taking pictures as you receive your diploma and as you exit the stage. You will receive a 5x7 photo as a gift from the Alumni Association and have the option to purchase additional photos, including a photo of the class of 2008.
A Graduation Fair, hosted by the Oglethorpe Bookstore on March 12 from noon to 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall, will provide an opportunity to purchase printed announcements for mailing as well as academic regalia. A cap, gown and hood may be ordered at this time – $52.95 for undergraduate candidates and $55.95 for MAT candidates.
A $100 degree completion fee will be billed by the Business Office. Please let this serve as a reminder that graduation candidates must finish any “Incomplete” grades, forward any necessary transcripts, clear all financial aid, business office and library obligations and complete the surveys that will be emailed to all candidates.
The following is a schedule of events for Commencement Weekend 2008:
Wednesday, May 7th Carillon Ceremony and Dinner on the Quadrangle at 5:00 p.m. in Lupton Auditorium.
Seniors sign yearbooks and have an opportunity to ring a bell in Lupton Bell Tower. Dinner will follow on the quadrangle with the OU Young Alumni Club.
Thursday, May 8th Rehearsal briefing at 5:45 p.m. in Conant Performing Arts Center.
Attendance is imperative. Materials will be distributed to you, and your class composite photograph will be taken promptly at 6:00 p.m. Men – coats and ties; Women – appropriate dress. Seven “rain tickets,” to be used for guests in the case of inclement weather, will be issued to each graduation candidate at the conclusion of the rehearsal.
Friday, May 9th Reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Conant Performing Arts Center.
Sponsored by President Larry Schall and his wife, Betty Londergan, and the Oglethorpe Alumni and Family Associations, this reception honors the graduation candidates and their families and guests. You will receive a separate formal invitation to this event. Oglethorpe faculty and staff are also invited.
Saturday, May 10th Exercises at 9:00 a.m. on the Quadrangle, or in Dorough Field House in case of rain.
Graduation candidates in regalia are asked to assemble by 8:00 a.m. on the sidewalk between Hearst Hall and Lupton Hall, or in the Schmidt Sport & Recreation Center in case of rain. There will be a “Help Station” staffed by the Alumni Association where the procession assembles. After commencement, at about 11:00 a.m., faculty and staff will be available to greet graduates, family and guests.
