Course
Description:
This course is an introduction to understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring a foundation in the basic grammar as well as on listening comprehension and spoken Spanish through class activities, tapes and videos.
Course
Requirements:
Regular attendance and
active participation in class are the essential basic course requirements for
Spanish 101.
Attendance:
Essential to successful second-language acquisition is continued practice and contact with the language. Therefore, class attendance is required. You may miss three classes for any reason. After these four absences, the final grade will be lowered one third of a grade per absence (from B+ to B, for example), and a half a grade in case of A (from A to A-). If you have a total of ten absences you will receive an F or FA in the course. There is no distinction between “excused” and “unexcused” absences. If you were not in class, you were not in class. Use your allowed absences wisely. This is the official policy of the Division of Foreign Languages.
Homework
and Procedures:
Students must follow the daily scheduled assignments, which will generally involve careful study of grammar, vocabulary and strategy foundations of Spanish presented throughout each chapter. These areas will be reinforced and reviewed in depth in class. Students will be required to complete homework assignments (marked “Tarea” on the syllabus) to be covered in class or turned in for a grade per the professor’s discretion. These assignments are to be prepared for the day that they appear on the syllabus, prior to coming to class. Please read the pages assigned each day, completing the specific exercises indicated on the syllabus.
Being absent from a previous class does not excuse students from homework and class preparations. It is the student’s responsibility to stay informed of all work assigned and to submit work on time as scheduled. Late homework will not be accepted.
Multimedia Assignments:
In
conjunction with the normal text-based activities, various multimedia exercises
(generally CD and video-based) will be incorporated into daily activities.

Cheating
Cheating is defined as:
a. The
unauthorized possession or use of notes, texts or other such materials during
an examination.
b. Copying
another person’s work or participation in such an effort.
c. An
attempt or participation in an attempt to fulfill the requirements of a course
with work other than one’s original work for that course.
Students have the responsibility of avoiding
participation in cheating incidents by doing their own work, taking precautions
against others copying their work and in general not giving or receiving aid
beyond what is authorized by the instructor.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism includes representing someone else’s words,
ideas, data or original research as one’s own and in general failing to
footnote or otherwise acknowledge the source of such work. One has the
responsibility of avoiding plagiarism by taking adequate notes on reference
materials, including material taken off the internet or other electronic
sources, used in the preparation of reports, papers and other coursework.
