Reflejos: Intermediate
Spanish. Renjilian-Burgy, Mraz, Chiquito,
de Darer. Houghton
Mifflin (2004).
Spanish Dictionary of your
choice (Recommended)
Course Objective:
The purpose of this course
is to advance the student’s fundamental foundation of Spanish accumulated during
the beginning-level sequence by increasing proficiency in Spanish in all four
skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking, and to promote
the use of the Spanish language in social situations and meaningful cultural
contexts.
Course Requirements:
Regular
attendance and study of grammar, homework preparation, exercise completion, and
active participation in class, are the essential basic course requirements for
Spanish 201. Active classroom
participation in Spanish will
be a vital factor in the calculation of the final grades for this course.
Excessive speaking in English or lack of participation at all will have
an impact on the overall grade.
There
will be two tests during the semester. At the end of the term a Final Exam
examination covering all semester work will be given. There will be periodic
quizzes throughout the term. Students
will also complete a group project, whose topic and format will be discussed in
detail as the semester progresses.
Make-Up Tests:
Make-up
tests will be only given under extraordinary circumstances such as medical
reasons (Doctor’s note required). If a test or quiz is missed, a grade of zero
will be assigned.
Attendance:
Essential to successful
second-language acquisition is continued practice and contact with the
language. Therefore, class attendance is
required. You may miss three
classes for any reason. After these three
absences, the final grade will be lowered one third of a grade per absence
(from B+ to B, for example), and a half a grade in case of A (from A to
A-). If you have a total of ten absences
you will receive an F or FA in the course.
There is no distinction between “excused” and “unexcused” absences. If you were not in class, you were not in
class. Use your allowed absences
wisely. This is the official
policy of the Division of Foreign Languages.
Homework and Procedures:
Students must do all
assigned homework or reading before coming to class. Being absent from a previous class does not
excuse students from homework and class preparations. It is the student’s responsibility to stay
informed of all work assigned and to submit work on time as scheduled. Late homework will not be accepted. Not all homework assigned will be
collected, but students are still responsible for completing daily tasks as
assigned on the syllabus. Homework
should not be completed at any point during class time. Rushing to complete assignments at the
beginning of class reveals a lack of student preparation and in no way benefits
the student’s growth.
If
a student is unable to complete the work for a course on time for reasons of
health, family tragedy, or other circumstances the instructor deems
appropriate, the grade “I” may be assigned. If the student
completes the work within thirty days of the last day of exams (of the semester
in question), the instructor will evaluate the work and turn in a revised
grade. Any “I” not changed by the professor within forty-five days of
the last day of exams will automatically be changed to
a grade of “F”.

Cheating
Cheating is defined as:
a. The
unauthorized possession or use of notes, texts or other such materials during
an examination.
b. Copying
another person’s work or participation in such an effort.
c. An
attempt or participation in an attempt to fulfill the requirements of a course
with work other than one’s original work for that course.
Students have the responsibility of avoiding
participation in cheating incidents by doing their own work, taking precautions
against others copying their work and in general not giving or receiving aid
beyond what is authorized by the instructor.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism includes representing someone else’s words,
ideas, data or original research as one’s own and in general failing to
footnote or otherwise acknowledge the source of such work. One has the
responsibility of avoiding plagiarism by taking adequate notes on reference
materials, including material taken off the internet or other electronic
sources, used in the preparation of reports, papers and other coursework.
