SUMMER 2008 SYLLABUS
PHY102L (Sec. 02) - Introductory Physics Laboratory - Tuesday & Wednesday 1:15-4:15 PM
Instructor: Dr. Rulison [Office: G-318, Phone: 364-8409, E-Mail: mrulison@oglethorpe.edu]
Course Description
This is the second semester of a two-semester laboratory for introductory physics courses.
It will consist of ten experiments designed to support and clarify concepts considered
in the introductory lecture courses.
Text
There is no text to buy. Instructional materials will be handed out at the beginning of
each experiment. See links from lab web page
http://www.oglethorpe.edu/faculty/~m_rulison/IntroPhysLab/sum_introlab2.htm for lab handouts and descriptions.
Attendance Policy
Lab attendance is mandatory. There will be no make-up labs. However, only the best
nine
of the ten lab grades will be included in your final grade. Thus, you can safely miss
one lab.
Quizzes and Tests
There will be no quizzes or tests.
University Policies
We will follow standard university policies as detailed in the Academic Regulations and
Policies section of the current university bulletin with respect to the honor code,
course withdrawal, satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading options and incompletes.
Grading
The final lab grade will be a letter grade given according to the university +/- grade
schedule. The numerical grade from which the letter grade is generated will derive from
the grades on your best nine lab reports.
Lab Safety
Safety is not a major problem in physics labs because there are relatively few hazards.
But safety concerns must not be neglected. The red buttons at each of the lab doors, when
struck, cut off all flow of natural gas in the building. They are to be used only if gas
leaks or gas burner fires cannot, for some reason, be controlled by the gas valves on the
benches. The gas cannot be turned back on without instituting a lengthy, time-consuming
process.
An eyewash and shower installation by the rear door is available, although we have never
had to use it. Safety concerns relevant to particular lab procedures will be mentioned
when instructions are given for the experiment in question.
