CHM 101L GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB I
Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday 1:30 p.m.
Fall, 2012
INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Monte Wolf
OFFICE HOURS: As posted at G-319, or by appointment
COREQUISITE: CHM 101, General Chemistry I
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
General Chemistry I and II represents an introduction to the fundamental principles of chemistry. This course will familiarize the student with basic chemistry laboratory techniques. Some of the chemical reactions and properties of various physical states that are studied in the lecture portion of the course will be investigated. This course should prepare a student for further laboratory courses in chemistry and biology.
TEXT:
T. Greco, et al., Experiments in General Chemistry, 9th ed., Prentice Hall, 2007.
GRADING:
The lab grade (calculated on a 200 point basis) includes two lab exams, 40 pts and 60 pts. The remaining 100 points of lab grade will come from the 10 lab reports, 10 points per report. Unless otherwise stated the lab report includes the pre-lab, data, calculations and questions found in the lab manual.
The grading scale used for each course letter grade is:
B+= 87-90 C+= 77-80 D+= 67-70
A = 93-100 B = 83-87 C = 73-77 D = 60-67 F < 60% of total points
A-= 90-93 B- = 80-83 C- = 70-73
To check on your exam scores, use Moodle on PetrelNet
WITHDRAWAL:
Up to and through Octorber 31st the course may be dropped with a W regardless of current grade.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance to all lab sessions is required. It is important to be present at the start of the lab session. Unless otherwise stated, lab reports are due at the start (e.g. 1:30 p.m.) of following week’s lab session. Late reports are penalized at the rate of 2 points per day overdue.
ACADEMIC HONESTY:
The use of written or oral information not provided by the instructor during an exam is considered cheating. All work is subject to the Honor Code. The University policy on academic honesty will be followed.
Cheating:
a. The unauthorized possession or use of notes, texts, or other such materials during an examination.
b. Copying another person’s work or participation in such an effort.
c. An attempt or participation in an attempt to fulfill the requirements of a course with work other than one’s original work for that course.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism includes representing someone else’s words, ideas, data, or original research as one’s own, and in general failing to footnote or otherwise acknowledge the source of such work. One has the responsibility of avoiding plagiarism by taking adequate notes on reference materials, including material taken off the internet or other electronic sources, used in the preparation of reports, papers, and other coursework.
INCOMPLETE GRADE:
An incomplete grade would be issued only in extreme circumstances as determined by the professor. The University policy on incomplete grades will be followed.
