COREQUISITE:      Organic Chemistry II

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:

Organic chemistry is one of the most interesting and practical areas of chemistry.  Many of the materials we handle each day are products of organic chemistry.  Living systems are also organic in nature, so organic chemistry gives a foundation for understanding chemical reactions in living organisms. In the laboratory the student will learn the necessary skills for the preparation, purification, and identification or organic compounds.  The acquired skills will then be applied to simple and multi-step synthesis conducted in the laboratory.

GRADING:

The lab grade is calculated from six lab data sheets (8 pts ea, 48 total) plus six quizzes

(8 pts ea, 48 total) plus lab check out (4 pts).

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

            Attendance to all lab sessions is required. It is important to be present at the start of the lab session. Unless otherwise stated, lab reports are due at the start (e.g. 11:00 a.m.) of following week’s lab session. Late reports are penalized at the rate of 2 points per day overdue.

WITHDRAWAL:

You may withdraw from the course through July 25th with a W regardless of current course grade.

INCOMPLETE GRADE:

An incomplete grade would be issued only in extreme circumstances as determined by the professor.  The University policy on incomplete grades will be followed.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:

The use of written or oral information not provided by the instructor during an exam is considered cheating.  The University policy on academic honesty will be followed.

        Cheating:

                    a.   The unauthorized possession or use of notes, texts, or other such materials during an examination.

                    b.   Copying another person’s work or participation in such an effort.

                    c.   An attempt or participation in an attempt to fulfill the requirements of a course with work other than one’s original work for that course.

                    Plagiarism:

                          Plagiarism includes representing someone else’s words, ideas, data, or original research as one’s own, and in general failing to footnote or otherwise acknowledge the source of such work.  One has the responsibility of avoiding plagiarism by taking adequate notes on reference materials, including material taken off the internet or other electronic sources, used in the preparation of reports, papers, and other coursework.
