History of U.S. Foreign Relations

2005

Paper Topic #1

---

Due: September 28th at the beginning of class.

Write a 5-page (typed, double-spaced, and proofread) essay discussing the challenges faced by the new U.S. nation as it sought to chart an independent course in its relations with other nations.   Using as many of the readings and discussions from class as you can, construct an Argument that suggests how we might begin to understand the uniqueness of the U.S. international perspective (up to and including the Monroe Doctrine).

Why was it so difficult to pursue a new independent approach to foreign relations?  What were the main controversies (domestic), challenges (both domestic and foreign)?  Distinguish between the challenges of applying a new strategy and the challenges of articulating a coherent policy based on ideals.  Also, consider whether U.S. goals and strategies were different when dealing with European vs. non-European groups.

How would characterize early U.S. foreign relations?

You must make direct reference to at least 5 of the primary sources.  You argument must be written for an audience that has read all of the assigned readings.  Use proper citations/footnotes.
