What is Family Weekend?

There is something for everyone at Family Weekend October 20-22, 2023 at Oglethorpe University. Whether it’s cheering for our athletics teams, attending a lecture, or spending a couple of hours seeing the sights in Atlanta, it will be a time to remember!

Family Weekend 2023 Schedule of Events

3 – 7 p.m. Check-in Registration | Turner Lynch Campus Center Atrium
Check in at our table in the TLCC to receive your Family Weekend items and meet some of our Campus Life staff.

5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Parents and Faculty Welcome Reception | Cousins Center Atrium & Patio
Enjoy light refreshments with your students’ professors. Learn more about what your student is learning and how the faculty engages with your students in the classroom and prepares them for life after college.

6 – 8 p.m. Dinner On Your Own | Town Brookhaven
Please enjoy the local area while visiting some of our OU Petrel Partners that offer discounts to the Oglethorpe community! Ensure your student brings their Petrel Pass to take advantage of the great deals! Find an extended list at OU Petrel Partners.

7 – 9 p.m. Campus Movie Night: Halloweentown | relocated to Schmidt
This Disney Channel Classic Centers on Marnie, who, on her 13th Halloween, learns she’s a witch, discovers a secret portal, and is transported to Halloweentown—a magical place where ghosts and ghouls, witches and werewolves live apart from the human world: but she soon finds herself battling wicked warlocks, evil curses, and endless surprises. Includes snacks and beverages.

8 – 10 p.m. Opening Night: Fairycakes by Douglas Carter Beane | Conant Performing Arts Center
“What happens when those woodland fairies aren’t busy with the business of A Midsummer Night’s Dream? Why, it seems they all have jobs in some of our favorite fairy tales. Fairycakes is a hilarious, fantastical, and poignant mash-up between Shakespeare and the Brothers Grimm. To purchase tickets online, visit Eventbrite.  General Admission tickets are $20. Tickets are free for Oglethorpe students, faculty, and staff with a Petrel Pass. Call the box office to reserve free tickets at 404-504-1074.

8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Silver Lake Trail: Nature Walk | Turner Lynch Campus Center
Start your day off with a nature walk around Silver Lake. Oglethorpe community members frequent this local trail for its robust wildlife and walkability for people of all ages. RSVP required. Participants will be shuttled from the Turner Lynch Campus Center to the trailhead.

11 a.m. Brookhaven International Festival | Peachtree Creek Greenway
Join in the fun and celebrate the inaugural Brookhaven International Festival. Learn more.

12 p.m. Oglethorpe University Women’s Volleyball vs. Hendrix
Come show love and support at the Stormy Petrel’s Women’s Volleyball game! Wear your Family Weekend shirts or your best OU gear to cheer them on to victory!

12 – 3 p.m. Fall Festival: Sponsored by OU Student Programming Board | Academic Quad
Join the Oglethorpe community for our annual Fall Festival! Families and guests are welcome to participate in many fun fall carnival activities. Including caricature artists, face and pumpkin paintings, trackless train rides, carnival games and more!

4 – 6 p.m. OU Athletics Game Day Tailgate | Turf Field
Soak in Atlanta’s beautiful fall weather while playing yard games and mingling with other OU students, families, and guests.

5 p.m. OUWSC
7 p.m. OUMSC
Oglethorpe University Women and Men’s Soccer vs. Berry
| Turf Field
Support our Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams as they face our SAA rivals, the Berry Vikings. Fun Fact: The men’s game aims to break the attendance record with 2,000 fans! Come cheer both teams on to victory!

Join us for brunch and join other families to create an award-winning trivia team! Prizes will be awarded to the Top 3 teams!

11 a.m. Oglethorpe University Women’s Volleyball vs. Rhodes

1 – 5 p.m. Atlanta Excursion and Experience | Various Atlanta Locations
Grab your family for some off-campus ATL fun! Experience some of Atlanta’s best attractions! Group tickets can be purchased directly from Atlanta City Pass. Official Atlanta City PASS®
