Oglethorpe University has been offering one- or two-week Advanced Placement Institutes in cooperation with the College Board since 1984. One main goal of this program is to prepare secondary school teachers to teach advanced placement (AP) courses in their schools. Many of the courses are designed primarily for teachers who are teaching AP courses for the first time or have less than three years experience at that level. However special sessions are available in some subject areas for teachers with more than three years experience.
The institutes are designed to familiarize teachers with the advanced placement examination, to assist teachers in the development of the curriculum for their chosen subjects, to share successful teaching strategies and to provide an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and professional networking with other AP teachers. The AP Physics courses include laboratory exercises that are emphasized in the current College Board Course Descriptions. The AP courses in European History, Spanish Language and Music Theory are open to both new and experienced AP teachers.
