Monday, May 15. Posted by Udara Soysa.
I did not sleep last night to so I would be at school early to
get some material for one of our presentations at New Orleans. I was
able to get most of my work done before we left for New Orleans
around 8:30 a.m. I missed the group from the last trip, such as
Vicky, Amie, George, Alix, Jonathan, Amber, Cynshen, Laura and
others who were not able to accompany us in the journey. Only Irene,
Duo and I were there from the last team. New members include Sara,
Jeff, Danielle, Maria and Joahanna, who added variety to our
journey.
I think the donated coffee gave me the energy to drive for
several hours before Irene and Dr. Deborah Merola took over around
Biloxi, Mississippi. It is always fun driving on American roads
where people observe most rules, unlike in Sri Lanka and India.
The visit to the Ninth Ward was again very educational. A little
had been done by the authorities to address the suffering of the
hurricane victims and the situation remains as bad as ever. In Dr.
Merola's words, the situation is a shame to America as a nation.
I hope our action can make the situation better and that those
reading this blog will take personal initiatives to be here in New
Orleans in the future since people here really and desperately need
more support from us!
The driving didn’t feel long due to all the political discussions
that took place between Jeff, Dr. Merola, Joahanna and me. It was
pretty fun actually to discuss all our simple solutions and formulas
for all the complex American problems.
We arrived at Camp Algiers around 4:00 p.m., and the views of the
camp gave me happy memories of spring break! I almost felt all the
spring break group members present with me at that time.
We had our delicious New Orleans dinner and were briefed by Bev
on our plans for the week.
This week will be another memorable week in my life. These
memories will last forever in my mind as it did before few months
back during the Alternative Spring Break journey.
