Wednesday, May 17. Posted by Udara Soysa.
It was a long, cold night yesterday. I woke up around 4:00 a.m.,
5:00 a.m. and then finally 6:00 a.m. The folks at the camp are
keeping it so cold now I believe that they are working under the
assumption that people in the camps are penguins from Alaska!
The work at the camp today was more fun! We were filmed by a crew
from our volunteer organization ACORN, documenting their NGO
activities.
Today's house did not smell as bad as yesterday's house, which
was a great thing. However, the work went perfectly and the group
was able to finish the work in perfect style. I also need to give
credit to the folks from Alabama who gave us great support. Not to
mention the Ivy League kids from Colombia University who also gave
us a great helping hand.
The joy of the day was expanded by getting lost in
Katrina-stricken neighborhoods with Sara. Both Sara and I are the
worst group members when it comes to the sense of direction. Our
senses of direction were so bad last year that we got lost a couple
of times inside Traer! However, the great hospitality of the New
Orleans folks was highlighted when a Katrina-affected gentleman who
himself lived in a trailer gave us a one-hour ride to find our site.
I think we almost drove through all the neighborhoods in the area.
I really feel grateful for the big hearts of New Orleans
residents! They make us feel most welcomed, loved and cared.
The highlight of the day was the music show, and I must admit Bev
and Dr. Merola sure knew how to dance. The event got more
interesting when 12-year-old Irdin, who apparently has a big crush
on our friend Danielle, got to dance with her. It was a sweet
occasion filled with fun.
Looking back at the events so far, I feel great to be back in
here. I am very thankful for Bev and Dr. Schall for making this
possible and all of the others who are here working their hearts out
to make a difference in the lives of the New Orleans people.
