Oglethorpe University to Celebrate Founding
ATLANTA- Students, faculty, staff and
friends of Oglethorpe University will gather together on Thursday,
February 12, 1998, to reflect on the history, examine the heritage
and renew the traditions of the more than 160-year-old institution.
Activities for Oglethorpe Day include a convocation, the annual
"Petrels of Fire" race and a luncheon open to all who attend the
festivities.
The theme of this year’s festivities is "Friendship
at Yamacraw Bluff: James Oglethorpe and Tomochichi." The activities
will focus on the University’s namesake and Georgia’s founder,
General James Edward Oglethorpe, and his lifetime friendship with
the Yamacraw Indian Chief Tomochichi. Oglethorpe University
President Dr. Donald S. Stanton will deliver his annual
Oglethorpe Day address and the Oglethorpe Day Players will present
an original skit at the convocation in the Conant Performing Arts
Center at 11:05 a.m.
Prior to the convocation, at 11 a.m., the "Petrels
of Fire" race where students try to complete a 270-yard loop around
the academic quadrangle before the 12th peal of the school’s bells
will be run. To date, no student has beaten the clock.
Following the convocation, all students, faculty,
staff and friends of the University who attend the festivities are
invited to a luncheon in the Emerson Student Center.
Oglethorpe University is an independent, highly
selective, coeducational liberal arts institution located in
Atlanta. Founded in 1835 near Milledgeville, the University moved to
Atlanta and reopened at its present location on Peachtree Road in
1915.
