Oglethorpe University Singers and Chorale to
Present Spring Concert
ATLANTA- The Oglethorpe University Singers
and Chorale, under the direction of conductor Dr. W. Irwin Ray,
Jr., will present their spring concert featuring the spirituals
of Dr. William L. Dawson Friday, April 24 at 8 p.m. in Lupton
Auditorium.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert features Dawson’s There Is a Balm in
Gilead, Ain’t That Good News, Every Time I Feel the Spirit and
Soon-ah Will Be Done. Additional selections include Monteverdi’s
masterpiece madrigal Ecco Mormorar L’Onde, Handel’s oratorio chorus
Music, Spread Thy Voice Around (from Solomon), Hugo Distler’s
chorale motet Lobe den Herren, David Brunner’s setting of A Hymn to
God the Father from the sonnets of John Donne and Morten Lauridsen’s
setting of the Rilke poem Dirait-on.
The University Chorale will perform a Renaissance
chanson Dessus le Marche d’Arras by Adrian Willaert, a Romantic era
madrigal Return, Return My Lovely Maid by Francis Hutcheson, an
Italian madrigal Matona, Mia Cara by Orlando de Lassus and George
Gershwin’s Love Is Here To Stay.
Additional selections will feature the men and
women of the University Singers. Pianists for the concert are junior
Catherine Borck of Houston, Texas, sophomore Mandy McDow
of Knoxville, Tenn. and freshman Nicki Gilpin of Waynesboro,
Ga.
