Stormy Petrels to Tee Off at National
Tournament
ATLANTA— Oglethorpe University’s Stormy
Petrel Golf Team is one of 23 teams invited to participate in the
NCAA-Division III National Tournament at Jekyll Island May 12-15.
Practice rounds are May 10 and 11.
The Stormy Petrels, coached by Jim Owen, are
ranked 15th in the nation. Oglethorpe was seeded fifth in District
III which also includes nationally-ranked Methodist College (no. 1),
Greensboro College (no. 2), Guilford College (no. 7) and Emory
University (no.11).
The Stormy Petrels played in eight tournaments this
year, winning two of them. The Petrels finished in the top five
teams in three other tournaments, and in the top seven teams in the
other three tournaments.
In addition, the Petrels captured the SCAC
championship by a 21-stroke margin. Senior Tolliver Williams
of Panama City, Fla. was named conference player of the year and was
low medallist for the tournament with rounds of 75-71—146. Williams’
71 tied the SCAC record for single-round score and his 146 set the
SCAC two-day low total. Sophomore Brent Bell of Rome, Ga.
finished second in the tournament followed by teammates senior
Ben Hanes of Auburn, Ga. in 10th place and senior Hal
Robinson of Jacksonville, Fla. in 18th place.
