Lady Petrels' Coach Resigns
Atlanta - Oglethorpe University’s women’s basketball and
golf coach Beth Elbon has resigned her position with the Stormy
Petrels. Elbon is leaving Oglethorpe to assume the women’s
basketball head coaching position at Franklin & Marshall College in
Lancaster, Pa.
Elbon’s basketball teams compiled a record of 25-48 over three
seasons. She coached Oglethorpe’s first women’s golf team last
spring finishing fifth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference (SCAC).
"We are sorry to lose Coach Elbon. She has done a great job of
leading our women’s program," said Oglethorpe University Director of
Athletics Jack Berkshire. "I think this year’s team can become the
best in the program’s short history. We regret Beth will not be here
to be a part of that effort. She will be missed."
Oglethorpe University’s women’s basketball program started in the
1991-92 school year. Brenda Hillman coached the Lady Petrels from
1992-96 with a 32-62 record. Elbon, who began coaching at Oglethorpe
in 1996, produced the young team’s best record, 10-15, in the
1996-97 season.
"I am grateful for the experience and opportunities I’ve had
while coaching for Oglethorpe. I have enjoyed being involved in
establishing the groundwork for the success of our women’s
basketball and golf programs," said Elbon. "It will be difficult to
leave the many special people in the campus community with whom I’ve
worked; Oglethorpe is a very special place."
Oglethorpe University is an independent, highly selective,
coeducational liberal arts university located in northeast Atlanta.
The University is an active member of the Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference (SCAC) and Division III of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Oglethorpe’s athletic
program consists of 14 teams with men and women fielding squads in
seven sports.
