Oglethorpe University to Host Scholars of
London
Atlanta - Oglethorpe University will host The Scholars of
London Vocal Chamber Quartet at the University’s Miriam H. and John
A. Conant Performing Arts Center on Thursday, January 21 at 8 p.m.
The free concert, sponsored by the University Programming
Committee, will feature Vaughan Williams’ "Silence and Music;"
romantic and contemporary part songs; madrigals from England, France
and Italy; and folk songs from around the world.
Since their professional debut in 1970, The Scholars of London
have given at least 2,000 concerts in more than 50 countries. Their
sparkling and entertaining performances, livened by humorous
commentary, span five centuries of madrigals, folksongs, sacred
music and much more from many countries. They have performed in many
of the world’s most famous concert halls, from New York’s Lincoln
Center, London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Sydney Opera House to
smaller, more intimate venues such as Wigmore Hall in London and the
Brahmssaal in Vienna.
The name "Scholars" derives from the fact that the original
members of the group all won scholarships to Cambridge University to
sing in the famed choir of King’s College Chapel. The Scholars of
London includes soprano Kym Amps, counter-tenor Angus Davidson,
tenor Robin Doveton and bass David van Asch. van Asch and Doveton
are both founding members while Amps and Davidson joined the group
in 1983 and 1986 respectively.
Oglethorpe University is an independent, highly-selective,
coeducational liberal arts university located at 4484 Peachtree Road
