Oglethorpe University To Host Georgian Chamber Players

Atlanta – Oglethorpe University presents the Georgian Chamber Players at the University's Miriam H. and John A. Conant Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, March 9 at 8 p.m.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Georgian Chamber Players are in their 15th season of collaborations with guest artists of local, national and international renown. Members of the group, Beth Newdome, violin; Reid Harris, viola; and Christopher Rex, cello, are all principal players in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO). At the Oglethorpe University concert, Newdome, Harris and Rex will be joined by ASO violinist Christopher Pulgram, ASO principal clarinetist Laura Ardan, ASO principal harpist Elisabeth Remy and ASO principal flutist Christina Smith.

The program includes Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Assobio a Jato (The Jet Whistle) for Flute and Cello," Mozart's "Quintet for clarinet, two violins, viola and cello- K.581," Debussy's "Sonata for flute, viola and harp" and Ravel's "Introduction and Allegro for harp, string quartet, flute and clarinet."

THE GEORGIAN CHAMBER PLAYERS

BETH NEWDOME, violin, joined the ASO as Assistant Concertmaster in 1991 and became a full-time member of the GCP in 1997. She is a frequent soloist with chamber and orchestral ensembles and in 1996, premiered a violin concerto composed for her by Tristan Foison. Before coming to Atlanta, she was Assistant Concertmaster of the Jacksonville Florida Symphony.

REID HARRIS, viola, has been the ASO's Principal Viola since 1979; previously he was Assistant Principal Viola of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Harris studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and is a frequent soloist with the ASO. He is a founding member of the GCP.

CHRISTOPHER REX, violoncello, joined the ASO in 1979 as Principal Cello and occupies the endowed Miriam and John Conant Chair. Mr. Rex has made numerous national appearances as recitalist and chamber musician. He and his brother, Charles who is Assistant Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, are about to record Stephen Paulus' "Double Concerto" with the Tuscon Philharmonic.

CHRISTOPHER PULGRAM, violin, is now in his seventh season as first violinist with the ASO. Mr. Pulgram studied at the University of Michigan, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the International Menuhin Academy in Gstadd, Switzerland. He has toured internationally as a soloist, has recorded on the EMI label with Yehudi Menuhin and toured as principal violinist with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.

LAURA ARDAN, clarinet, has been the ASO's Principal Clarinet since 1982 and occupies the endowed Robert Shaw Chair. Ms. Ardan attended the Juilliard School of Music and, prior to joining the ASO, was both a resident performer and teaching artist at the Lincoln Center Institute and a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. She has an extensive national background as both a soloist and chamber musician.

ELISABETH REMY, harp, has been the ASO's Principal Harp since 1995. Ms. Remy graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University in 1995 with a double major in music and French and has won numerous national awards, including a Tanglewood Fellowship in harp. Also a frequent soloist, she is the harpist for Britten's "Ceremony of Carols" on Telarc's "A Robert Shaw Christmas: Angels on High".

CHRISTINA SMITH, flute, became the youngest Principal Flute of a major American orchestra when she was chosen for the ASO's position in 1991. At the age of 15 she performed as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony and later graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in 1989. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music until she began her career in Atlanta. Ms. Smith continues to appear frequently in recitals, chamber music and master classes.
