Oglethorpe University Class Tackles Workplace Violence

Atlanta – “Unfortunately timely” may be one way to describe a current University College class being taught at Oglethorpe University. The class, “Issues in Self Defense,” consisting of nearly a dozen adult learners, has been discussing issues like aggressive behavior, domestic and workplace violence, and pre-incident indicators to violence. The class has now changed focus to more proactive prevention measures.

For the next two classes scheduled for August 11 and 16, students not only will study the physical dynamics of violence, recognize physical cues of incipient violence and sharpen their awareness of surreptitious approach tactics favored by human predators, but they will actually practice self-defense evasive measures and tactics.

The class is taught by George Kennedy. Kennedy has a master’s degree in conflict management and is a fifth degree black belt in Aikido.

Classes on August 11 and 16 will be held from 6-8:15 p.m. in the Schmidt Recreation Center on the campus of Oglethorpe University.

Oglethorpe University is an independent, highly selective, coeducational liberal arts university located at 4484 Peachtree Road, NE. University College is Oglethorpe’s distinctive program for working adults offering undergraduate, graduate, and certification programs.
