Oglethorpe University to Showcase Faculty
Artist
Atlanta – Oglethorpe University is pleased to announce the
exhibition, “Quiet Times, Quiet Places: Landscapes in Oil by Lloyd
Nick.” The exhibition will run from September 26 through October 31,
1999.
Lloyd Nick has served as a professor of art at Oglethorpe
University since 1984. He is founding director of the Oglethorpe
University Art Gallery and founding and current director of
Oglethorpe University Museum (OUM). During his recent sabbatical
leave, Nick traveled to Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and
the Pacific Northwestern United States. This exhibition of
landscapes focuses on paintings completed during his recent
sabbatical leave, and also includes related artwork from his
previous sabbatical.
“For more than thirty years now, I have painted mountains. When I
see them, I seem to react as a child seeing home again at the end of
a journey,” said Nick. “I am very attracted to the drama and the
subtleties of the mountains and their relationship with the clouds
above them. This is particularly moving at the end of the day—at
sunset.”
Born in Rochester, New York, Nick received his bachelor of fine
arts degree from Hunter College (City University of New York) in
1966. He earned his master of fine arts in painting from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1968 where he studied with Neil
Welliver. Nick also won national competitions to study at
Yale-Norfolk and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture with
prominent realist painters William Bailey and Philip Pearlstein.
Nick began his teaching career in 1969 at the American College of
Monaco where he was chairman of the art department. He also taught
at Guilford and Methodist Colleges in North Carolina before joining
the faculty at Oglethorpe University.
“The mountains have a mythological presence for me,” said Nick.
“I have tried to paint these natural dramas. The subtleties hiding
in the majestic forms and patterns are equally meaningful and
necessary to the vision, because they define the sensation of the
specific moments. The subtleties are the result of limited and
constantly changing light on sensual forms of two opposites—the
ethereal clouds and the eternal mountains.”
Nick’s works have been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of
Art, the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and Gallerie
Monte Carlo in Monaco. His paintings are also in the private
collections of Princess Grace of Monaco, Baron and Baroness Guy de
Rothschild of Monaco, and in corporate and public collections in
more than 10 countries.
