Oglethorpe Awards James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarships - Five Students to Receive "Full-Ride"

Atlanta – The 15th Annual James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship Competition was held at Oglethorpe University on Saturday, January 22, 2000.

Oglethorpe's James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship provides tuition, room and board for four years of undergraduate study, if scholarship criteria continue to be met. Recipients are selected on the basis of an academic competition held on campus in January of each year. Students must have a combined SAT score of at least 1300 (ACT 30), a 3.6 or higher cumulative GPA, and a superior record of leadership in extracurricular activities either in school or in the community.

The JEO Scholarship Competition was held January 22, 2000 with 92 competitors from 14 states. Prior to the competition, the competitors are sent subject specific readings as well as a general academic reading for preparation. The day of the competition, the participants are judged on their discussion of the general reading in the morning session led by two faculty judges and 8-10 students participating per group. The students then write an essay on the topic they have discussed (all groups write about the same topic). The students then break for lunch. In the afternoon they discuss the subject specific reading. The writing portion is judged by a faculty panel that have no way of knowing which group the student participated in earlier, who they are, or where they are from. At then end of the day, five winners are chosen from the top five scores (one set of scores from the morning discussion, one from the afternoon session and the last set of scores from the writing).

The five winners are named James Edward Oglethorpe Scholars. They each receive full tuition, room and board scholarships worth at this time to be more than $94,000 dollars. The other competitors that do well in the competition are named Presidential Scholars and receive $10,500 per year plus consideration for additional need-based grants for four years. The winners are notified by telephone the next day by the Dean of Enrollment Management and admission staff members.

This year's James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship Recipients are:

  • Joseph (Jo Jo) Brisendine from Conyers, Georgia. He attends Rockdale County High School.
