Oglethorpe's Weiss Named to Interim Post
Atlanta – Oglethorpe University President Larry D. Large
announced today the appointment of Victoria L. Weiss to the position
of provost at Oglethorpe University.
Weiss, director of development and director of the core
curriculum at Oglethorpe, replaces Nancy H. Kerr who retires June
30, 2000. Weiss will serve as interim provost until June 30, 2001. A
search committee will begin reviewing candidates to assume the
position of provost in a permanent capacity later this summer.
“I am pleased to appoint Dr. Victoria Weiss as interim provost,”
said Large. “Vicky’s academic and administrative experience as
director of the core curriculum and director of development at
Oglethorpe and her many accomplishments in the classroom will serve
the university well as she undertakes this assignment.”
Weiss is currently director of development at Oglethorpe where
she is responsible for fundraising at the university, including a
successful $35 million capital campaign, the annual fund, and all
special events related to fundraising. In addition, Weiss is the
director of the core curriculum at Oglethorpe University where she
has been responsible for the development, coordination, and
maintenance of Oglethorpe’s unique interdisciplinary curriculum.
“I was pleased to bring a senior faculty member into the
Advancement Division when Vicky joined the advancement staff three
years ago,” said Robert J. Buccino, vice president for advancement.
“She more than lived up to all our expectations and I’m sorry to
lose, even temporarily, such a talented member of my division.
However, she will do an excellent job as chief academic officer.”
Prior to joining Oglethorpe’s fundraising efforts full-time in
1997, Weiss was professor of English at Oglethorpe University since
1977.
Weiss earned her bachelor’s degree in English at St. Norbert
College in DePere, Winsconsin. She earned a master’s degree in
English and her doctorate in English from Lehigh University.
Active in professional organizations, Weiss has been president of
the American Association for the Advancement of Core Curriculum,
treasurer of the Council for the Administration of General and
Liberal Studies and a member of the executive council of the
Association of General and Liberal Studies. She has received
numerous awards for her excellence in teaching and has published a
number of scholarly papers.
