Oglethorpe Commencement - Saturday, May 6,
2000
WHO: 280 graduates of Oglethorpe University Class of 2000
WHAT: Commencement ceremony with address given by Louis
Sullivan, president of Morehouse School of Medicine and former
secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human
Services
WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 6
WHERE: Oglethorpe University academic quadrangle
(if rain, Dorough Field House – Athletic Center)
4484 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta
WHY BRING YOUR CAMERA: The roles are reversed as members
of the faculty engage in more antics than the graduating seniors
themselves. For the last few years, a handful of professors have
participated in judging what they call an “Olympic sport.” The
professors score each other on the “hooding” of honor graduates by
displaying 1 through 10 with their fingers. They’ve even adopted a
scoring system that incorporates a difficulty factor and penalties
for the accidental clip of a student’s nose or chin. Even the touch
of a student is cause for deduction.
Other photo ops include honorary degree recipient Louis Sullivan
and Joel Goldberg, former chief executive officer of Rich’s Inc.
