Oglethorpe Advancement VP Elected Springfield
President
Atlanta – Robert J. Buccino, vice president at Oglethorpe
University since 1995, has been elected president of Springfield
College in Illinois (SCI) in Springfield, Illinois. He will assume
office August 1.
"I’m very excited about this opportunity," said Buccino, who
succeeds Sister Suzanne Sims, the 17th president of the two-year
liberal arts Catholic college. "Being a college president has been a
dream of mine and SCI was a perfect fit. The Search Committee did an
outstanding job of providing me with all the materials I needed to
make an informed choice. I was impressed with the board of trustees’
vision for where the college needs to go, the commitment of the
faculty and staff, the enthusiasm of the students and the warm
feelings of the community. I believe that together we can lead SCI
into the kind of stability and stature a college with its rich
history deserves."
SCI was founded in 1929 by Catholic Ursuline Sisters and was the
first institution of higher learning in Springfield. SCI prides
itself on providing a high-quality education in a highly personal
and small community environment.
“It is with mixed feelings that I congratulate Bob Buccino on his
election,” said Oglethorpe President Larry D. Large. “I’m pleased
that Bob has achieved this distinction and sorry to lose him here at
Oglethorpe. He has done an outstanding job of leading the
Advancement Division for the past five years. I believe Springfield
will be very happy with their new president.”
Large indicated that plans for replacing Buccino will be
announced in approximately a week.
As vice president for advancement, Buccino was responsible for
development and fundraising, alumni relations, public relations and
the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art. He also co-chaired the
Committee and chaired the Commencement Committee, the Joint Usage
Committee (Miriam H. and John A. Conant Performing Arts Center) and
was staff liaison for the Nominating Committee and the Advancement
Committee of the board of trustees. During his tenure, Oglethorpe
completed The Oglethorpe Opportunity, A $35 Million Quest, which was
the largest fundraising campaign in the university’s history.
Previously, he served for 12 years as the vice-president for
advancement at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn. There he
was responsible for development, alumni relations and public
relations as well as continuing education. Albertus started an
accelerated degree program for adults in its continuing education
program that was the first of its kind in the area. Prior to
Albertus, Buccino was the vice-president of communications/marketing
for the Business/Industry Council of the Bridgeport Economic Region,
the executive director of the American Cancer Society, Eastern
Fairfield County, and the associate director of development at
Fairfield University. He began his career as chief administrative
aide/press secretary to the Mayor of Bridgeport.
Buccino, 51, graduated with a bachelor’s in history from
Fairfield University in 1971 and earned his master’s in American
studies/political science from Fairfield in 1983. He and his wife
Gail live in Norcross, Ga.
