New Trustees Attend First Meeting
Atlanta – The two newest trustees of Oglethorpe University
attended their first meeting today. Joselyn Butler and Susan Soper
were elected as new members of Oglethorpe University's board of
trustees at the October 27, 2000 meeting.
Joselyn Butler is press secretary to Governor Roy Barnes. Butler
graduated from Oglethorpe in 1991 with a bachelor of arts degree in
business administration and behavioral science. She began her career
in politics in 1990 -- fundraising for the Democratic Party of
Georgia. She later served as finance director for several state and
federal campaigns. She also served as a director for the past two
gubernatorial s in Georgia. Butler has volunteered with Atlanta
History Center, the Shepherd Center and the Fernbank Museum of
Natural History.
Susan Soper is assistant managing editor/features for The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution. After graduating from Oglethorpe in 1969,
Soper moved to Washington, D.C. and was a researcher and later a
writer for Newsday. In 1978, she moved to Hilton Head, S.C. and was
a freelance writer and editor. She returned to Atlanta in 1983,
working as a news writer at CNN before taking a position with The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution later that year. Soper is a member of
the Alumni Advisory Board for The Westminster Schools and has also
served on Oglethorpe's President's Advisory Board.
Oglethorpe University is an independent, highly selective,
coeducational, liberal arts institution located in Atlanta at 4484
Peachtree Road. Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe University is dedicated
to producing graduates who are broadly educated in the fundamental
fields of knowledge and the basic concepts and principles of their
disciplines. During the 1999-2000 academic year, Oglethorpe enrolled
1,230 students representing 32 states and international students
from 31 countries.
