GardenHouse Dance Company to Perform
"Textures" at Oglethorpe University on March 1
Atlanta – The
four-member, high-energy GardenHouse Dance Company will perform "Textures"
on March 1, 2001, at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. Critically
acclaimed Artistic Director
Nicole Livieratos created "Textures," which is a performance piece.
During
the 37-minute performance, which will take place at the Conant Performing
Arts Center on the campus of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia,
the dancers will take the audience through an assortment of vignettes
that juxtapose the absurd with the beautiful, the serious with the zany,
and the odd with the familiar.
Characteristic
of other productions by Ms. Livieratos, "Textures" employs a
blend of modern dance elements and performance art that incorporates a
variety of elements including four outstanding dancers, music, oranges,
and an armchair to reproduce the emotional and visual ride that individuals,
and particularly women, take each day.
"It
goes from the personal and meditative to the loony, out of control things
that happen," Ms. Livieratos says.
Ms.
Livieratos founded GardenHouse Dance Company with a commitment to the
belief that art at its best challenges, stimulates, and allows for a deeper
understanding of ourselves. The mission of the dance company is to create
excellent modern dance that is unique as well as accessible by using the
familiar in unfamiliar ways. Her signature use of a wide range of props
adds to the uniqueness of her work.
Since
its inception in 1992, GardenHouse Dance Company has broken new ground.
That same year it became the first dance company to have work commissioned
by the High Museum of Art. The following year, it was the first dance
company to be accepted to the Hambridge Center, a nationally recognized
artists' residency center. GardenHouse Dance Company was also the first
modern dance company to be invited to collaborate with the Georgia Institute
of Technology's Interactive Media Technology Center.
Ms.
Livieratos has been honored with the prestigious Mayor's Fellowship for
the Arts Award for Dance from the City of Atlanta. Her performance piece
"light" was chosen as best dance piece of the year by The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution newspaper. The performance piece was also commissioned
by the Arts Festival of Atlanta to be made into a film and presented as
a site-specific installation as part of Art in Odd Places. Ms. Livieratos
was recently selected by Creative Loafing newspaper as "Critics'
Choice Best Choreographer" for the year 2000.
Admission
is $10 for "Textures," which the dance company will perform
at 8 p.m. on March 1 at the Conant Performing Arts Center on the campus
of Oglethorpe University, which is located 4484 Peachtree Road, N.E.,
in Atlanta, Georgia. For more information, contact W. Christopher Cason,
