Oglethorpe University President Larry D. Large
to Moderate Plenary Session at Education Conference Involving
Georgia Governor Roy Barnes and State Superintendent of Schools
Linda Schrenko
Atlanta – Larry D. Large is set to moderate the Plenary
Session of a conference in Atlanta on February 21 that will bring
together the most pivotal leaders in education reform from
throughout the State of Georgia.
The Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education (ARCHE), and
the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE) are
co-hosting the conference to explore higher education's role in
efforts to improve Georgia public school education.
Titled Advancing Student Achievement: Higher Education
Collaborations with Public Schools, the conference draws together
business leaders, educators, and scholars to accomplish two primary
goals:
- Examine model activities undertaken by colleges and
universities in collaboration with K-12 schools, and
- Identify what more can be done through further cooperation to
enhance student success.
The conference will be held at the Loudermilk Center for the
Regional Community in downtown Atlanta. It will open with several
leading educational policy makers offering their perspectives on
higher education's role in public school student achievement. Six
concurrent panels will follow with college and public school
representatives addressing ways in which collaborative programs help
students. Topics will include: use of technology in the classroom,
alternative teacher certification methods, professional development
of teachers and administrators, student preparedness for college
(particularly in mathematics and science), and early learning's role
in student performance.
The Plenary Session, to be moderated by Oglethorpe University
President Larry D. Large, will address the theme Perspectives on
Higher Education's Role in the Service of Public School Student
Achievement. Serving as panelists will be Mark Musick, President of
the Southern Regional Education Board, Linda C. Schrenko, Georgia
State Superintendent of Schools, and Betty L. Siegel, President of
Kennesaw State University. Georgia Governor Roy Barnes will deliver
the keynote address at the concluding luncheon.
"I am pleased to be participating with ARCHE and GPEE because it
is so important to form a solid partnership between higher education
and our colleagues in the Georgia primary and secondary schools,"
says Dr. Large. "I am looking forward to learning the best ways in
which higher education can be a valued partner in this effort."
As part of the conference, organizers also plan to release a
comprehensive resource directory of more than 200 collaborative
programs designed to assist in the education of public school
students. Oglethorpe University's lauded Rich Foundation Urban
Leadership Program is one such program.
The conference is a collaborative effort between the Atlanta
Regional Consortium for Higher Education (ARCHE) and the Georgia
Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE).
ARCHE is a non-profit association founded in 1938. Its membership
includes 20 public and private colleges and universities in the
greater Atlanta metropolitan area. Oglethorpe University is a member
institution. ARCHE provides services that help its members expand
educational opportunities and collaborate to share resources, and
develops information showing higher education's benefits to society.
GPEE is a private, non-profit, non-partisan organization that has
united business, education, government, and community leaders since
1990 to improve education in Georgia. The organization researches
education issues, works with policymakers, and encourages
communities to design their own school improvement strategies.

co-educational, liberal arts institution located in Atlanta at 4484
