On the Wings of Progress: Thornwell Jacobs,
Honorary Degrees, and Women's Legacies at Oglethorpe University
Atlanta – The Oglethorpe University Community honored
Amelia Earhart and other notable women on Wednesday, February 14 at
Oglethorpe Day, an annual campus celebration that commemorates the
rich history and interesting traditions of one of Atlanta's oldest
universities.
After a bagpiper summoned the crowd at 10:10 a.m., the "Petrels
of Fire" race began. Brave students braved the slick conditions to
complete a 270-yard loop around campus before the campus chimes
stroke 12. Only a few students in Oglethorpe history have been able
to do this and, unfortunately, this was not the year for a winner.
After the race, the bagpiper led the crowd to the Conant Performing
Arts Center where Paul Hudson, registrar and cofounder of the
International Time Capsule Association, lectured on this year's
theme, "On the Wings of Progress: Thornwell Jacobs, Honorary
Degrees, and Women's Legacies at Oglethorpe." Following was a skit,
written and directed by Oglethorpe students, about Thornwell Jacobs
and his move to recognize 10 outstanding women in American society.
After the convocation, the community enjoyed lunch in the student
center with entertainment by the University Dancers.
