Oglethorpe University, with the Southern
Center for International Studies, to Host "A Summit on Europe" with
Former Heads of State on Friday, April 26
Atlanta – Former U.S. Secretaries of State Alexander Haig
and Lawrence Eagleburger will join fellow former heads of state from
around the world on a special panel for A Summit on Europe to take
place on the campus of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia, on
Friday, April 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Oglethorpe University is working in cooperation with the Southern
Center for International Studies and the State of Georgia on the
summit, which will be taped and later aired on PBS stations
throughout the country. The summit will be held in the Conant
Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
This prestigious group will address timely issues of political,
economic, social and environmental relevance as well as those
concerning foreign relations and security, particularly with respect
to the continuing evolution of the European Union. It promises to be
highly informative and thought provoking. The moderator will be
Marvin Kalb, Executive Director of the Washington, D.C. office of
the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public

The recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in parts of Europe,
and the subsequent devastating impact the outbreak is having on
European economies is certain to be among the topics of discussion
among the group of world leaders.
As a safeguard, the federal government has temporarily banned all
animals and animal products from the European Union. European Union
beef was banned several years ago due to the threat of mad cow
disease.

Summit Participants and Biographies
Lawrence
Eagleburger served as U.S. Secretary of State from 1992 to 1993
under President Bush. Mr. Eagleburger received his B.S. degree
from the University of Wisconsin in 1952, and earned his M.S.
degree, also from the University of Wisconsin in 1957. After serving
in various Foreign Service posts, Mr. Eagleburger served as
assistant to Dr. Henry Kissinger during the Nixon presidential
transition, and as Executive Assistant to Dr. Kissinger at the White
House in 1969. After serving as Political Advisor and as Chief of
the Political Section of the U.S. mission to NATO in Brussels, he
returned to Washington, D. C. in 1971 and acted as Executive
Assistant to Secretary of State Kissinger. In early 1981, President
Reagan nominated Mr. Eagleburger for the position of Assistant
Secretary of State for European Affairs. In 1982 he accepted a
position as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, the
third ranking position in the Department. Secretary Eagleburger is
currently Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the law firm of Baker,
Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell and serves on several Boards of
Directors.
Alexander
Haig served as U.S. Secretary of State from 1981 to 1982 under
President Reagan. Mr. Haig studied at Notre Dame, received his B.S.
degree from the U.S. Military Academy, and his M.A. degree from
Georgetown University. In the Nixon Administration, General Haig
served as military assistant to Dr. Henry Kissinger, Deputy
Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, and Chief
of Staff. In 1974, President Ford appointed him Supreme Allied
Commander in Europe, a post he held until he retired from the
military in 1979 and joined United Technologies Corporation as
President and Operating Officer. Mr. Haig returned to government
service as U.S. Secretary of State under President Reagan. In 1982,
Mr. Haig served as Director of Commodore International, and Chairman
of Atlantic and Pacific Advisory Counsel of United Technologies
Corporation. Currently, Mr. Haig is Chairman and President of his
own firm, Worldwide Associates Inc. He is also a Member of the Board
of Directors for several distinguished corporations. In addition to
receiving numerous medals, titles, and honorary degrees, Mr. Haig is
the author of several books.
Kim
Campbell served as Canada's nineteenth and first female Prime
Minister from June 13, 1993 to October 25, 1993. Ms. Campbell
received her B.A. and LL.B from the University of British Columbia.
She also studied Soviet affairs at the London School of Economics.
Ms. Campbell previously held cabinet portfolios as Minister of State
for Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Minister of Justice and
Attorney General and Minster of National Defense and Veterans'
Affairs. She was the first woman to hold Justice and Defense
portfolios. She is a Senior Fellow at the Gorbachev Foundation of
North America, and serves as member of the Visiting Committee of the
Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard, the
Corporation of Northeastern University, the Advisory board of Public
Policy, UCLA; the Board of Trustees for Thunderbird American
Graduate School of International Management in Arizona; the Advisory
Board of the Milken Institute, and the Advisory Board of the Global
Security Institute in San Francisco. Ms. Campbell is currently
Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles, California. She also serves
as Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders based at the John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Among many awards, Ms.
Campbell has been honored by the Law Society of Upper Canada; the
London School of Economics; Brock University; Harvard University;
University of California, Irvine; UCLA; and Northeastern University.
Her political memoir, Time and Chance was published in 1996.
Andrzej
Olechowski served as Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs from
1993 to 1995 and Minister of Finance in 1992. Dr. Olechowski studied
at the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw and he
lectured at the Warsaw Academy of Catholic Theology. He served as
Head of Department of Foreign Research and Trade Institute from
1978-1982, and as Economic Affairs Officer at UNCTAD, in Geneva from
1982-1984. Dr. Olechowski was an Economist of the World Bank in
Washington, DC from 1985 to 1987, and Deputy Governor of the
National Bank of Poland from 1989 to 1991. He then served as
Secretary of State at the Foreign Ministry of Economic Relations,
and was Poland's chief negotiator of the Association Treaty with the
European Union and the Central Europe Free Trade Agreement from 1991
to 1992. From 1992 to 1993 and in 1995, he served as Economic
Advisor to President Walsea. In addition, he was Chairman of Bank
Handlowy from 1991 to1996 and again from 1998 to 2000, and has been
Chairman of Central Europe Trust Poland from 1996-2000. His various
memberships include public policy initiatives, charitable and
educational foundations and International Advisory Boards. Dr.
Olechowski is also the author of numerous publications on foreign
policy and international trade.
Carl Bildt
served as prime Minister of Sweden from 1991 to 1994. Mr.
Bildt is a graduate of Stockholm University. He served as Chairman
of the Confederation of Liberal and Conservative Students from 1973
to 1974 and Chairman of European Democratic Students in 1974, and
became a member of the Stockholm County Council where he served
until 1976. Mr. Bildt was elected to the Swedish parliament in 1979
and served as Undersecretary of State in the Prime Minister's
Cabinet from 1979 to 1981. He was a member of the Parliamentary
Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1986, and the
Defense Committee from 1984 to 1987. He is currently Chairman of the
Moderate Party and the International Democrat Union (IDU), and has
been a member of the Executive Committee of the Moderate Party since
1981. From 1995 to 1997, he was the High Representative for peace
negotiations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mr. Bildt has written a
number of books and publications, including The Country that Stepped
out into the Cold and A Citizen of Holland, Sweden and Europe.
General
Klaus Naumann served as NATO's Chairman of the North Atlantic
Military Committee from 1996 to 1999. General Naumann's
distinguished military career began in 1958 after joining the
Bundeswehr. He furthered his military education in Hamburg and
London. General Naumann has held various command and operational
positions, including Battery Commander, Brigade Operations Officer,
Battalion Commander, and Brigade Commander. He also served as
Assistant Branch Chiefs tours and Executive Officer to the Vice
Chief of Staff of the Federal Armed Forces and as German Military
Representative to NATO Military Committee in Brussels where he was
Chief of the Military Policy, Nuclear Strategy and Arms Control
Section. He also served as a Deputy Chief of Staff for Planning, and
Deputy Chief of Staff for political-military affairs and operations
of the Armed Forces in Bonn. From 1991 to 1996, he was Commanding
General of I Corps in Munster, and Chief of Staff for the Federal
Arms Forces. General Naumann has received numerous military awards
and decorations from Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom,
Belgium, the United States, Austria, Norway, Hungary, the
Netherlands and Finland. His many publications include Die
Bundeswehr in einer Welt im Umbruch ("The Bundeswehr in a World of
Transition").
MODERATOR
Marvin Kalb
is executive director of the Joan Shorenstein Barone Center on the
Press, Politics and Public Policy. For the past twelve years, he
directed the Center at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School
of Government, where he also taught and lectured as the Edward R.
Murrow Professor on Press and Politics. Over the past thirty years,
his distinguished career includes serving as a diplomatic
correspondent and anchorman at CBS and NBC. He has also been a
moderator of Meet the Press.
PRODUCER
Julia Johnson White is the cofounder of the Southern
Center for International Studies and serves as its Vice President,
Legal Counsel, and Director of Educational Programs. Mrs.
Johnson-White is also creator of The Annual Report Series, a George
Foster Peabody Award winner. The series is based on conferences with
former U.S. Ambassadors to the United Nations, former U.S.
Secretaries of State, Defense, Education, Treasury, and former world
leaders. It is edited for national airing over the PBS network.
