Oglethorpe University to Celebrate Lupton
Tower, James Edward Oglethorpe at annual Oglethorpe Day
What: Oglethorpe Day, an annual campus celebration,
commemorating the rich history and interesting traditions of one of
Atlanta's oldest universities.
When: 10:10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13
Where: Academic Quadrangle.
Why: Oglethorpe University is steeped in English
traditions, beginning with its founding in 1835. Oglethorpe Day was
created for the campus community to heighten awareness and foster
appreciation for the school's history and traditions. In recent
years, it has grown to become a neighborhood community celebration.
This year's theme is "For Whom the Bells Toll: Eighty Years in
the Lupton Tower" which focuses on the second building at the
University, Lupton Hall. It was Thornwell Jacobs' (President
1915-1943) intention that Lupton Hall "dominate the campus for many
years." Its collegiate gothic design matched the motif that he had
set for Oglethorpe's architecture. Additionally, the theme this year
honors Dr. Jacobs' desire "that the hours at Oglethorpe may be
filled with music and harmony." Generations of those who have
learned, played, and worked at the University have heard the Lupton
bells. It is with affection that we dedicate Oglethorpe Day 2002 to
their cherished sound, which traditionally honors freedom in
America.
