Oglethorpe Students to Rappel off Clock Tower Tomorrow!

Atlanta – Oglethorpe students will be rappelling off of Lupton Hall on the Peachtree Road campus tomorrow (Friday, April 19) between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Lupton Hall, know for its stately bell tower, has long been the goal of student rock climbers, like David Jenkins who organized the event. "I have always wanted to rappel off the bell tower and that feeling is not unique to me," Jenkins said. "There are many seniors who are leaving this year that feel rappelling off Oglethorpe's monument is the best way to bring their time here to a close."

Four students will be belaying students, faculty and staff who are interested in taking on the five-story feat. They will use a 2-point harness, which means the rope is attached to two points on the harness. If there is a failure in one part of the harness, the second point will still hold the rappeller.

Lupton Hall is the most recognized building on campus. The 42 bells atop the hall’s bell tower ring every 15 minutes and can be heard from miles away. It is the first building visitors come to when entering through the Peachtree Road gates.

Oglethorpe is a coeducational, largely residential college located in the heart of Brookhaven, just north of Buckhead. The university provides a superior education in the liberal arts and sciences and selected professional disciplines in a diverse community characterized by civility, caring, inquiry and tolerance.
