J. Mack Robinson Donates $1 Million to
Oglethorpe
Building Named in Robinson's Honor
Atlanta – Oglethorpe University will dedicate J. Mack Robinson
Hall, named in honor of the Atlanta entrepreneur and philanthropist
who gave $1 million to Oglethorpe University in January 2002. The
dedication will take place at noon on Saturday, May 11, immediately
following Oglethorpe’s commencement exercises. J. Mack Robinson Hall
is a state-of-the-art classroom and faculty office building, which
also houses an art studio, a darkroom, and video editing equipment.
Robinson has been a long-time business neighbor of the University,
and his daughter studied art at Oglethorpe.
“Mack Robinson has long been a friend of Oglethorpe and a good
neighbor both to the university and to all Atlanta. In 1995
Oglethorpe was pleased to make him an alumnus by awarding him an
honorary degree, doctor of philosophy. With his commitment to
ethical standards in his business and personal life and with his
role as a contributing citizen, he is an exemplar of the values
Oglethorpe University upholds. This building that bears his name
makes it possible for us to honor the man and his philanthropy both
now and for generations to come,” stated Larry D. Large, president
of Oglethorpe University.
J. Mack Robinson began his career at the age of 10 at “The
Atlanta Journal” as a “helper” and by the age of 12 was working
seven days a week as a newspaper carrier. Today, he is a well-known
businessman and an exemplary philanthropist in Atlanta and in
America. For many years he has participated in ownership in
companies ranging from banking to fashion. Oglethorpe is not the
first higher education institution to honor such a fine example of
citizenship. In 1998, Georgia State University named their business
college J. Mack Robinson College of Business.
During the dedication ceremony, Dr. Large will unveil a portrait
of Mr. Robinson by Thomas V. Nash, well-known portraiture artist.
Speakers will include Dr. Large, various students and faculty
members. The ceremony will take place in the foyer of J. Mack
Robinson Hall, located at the rear of the academic quadrangle,
adjacent to Weltner Library.
Oglethorpe is a coeducational, largely residential college
located in the heart of Brookhaven, just north of the Buckhead
section of Atlanta. The University provides a superior education in
the liberal arts and sciences and selected professional disciplines
in a diverse community characterized by civility, caring, inquiry
and tolerance.
