Two Oglethorpe University Coaches named Coach
of the Year by NCAA SCAC
Atlanta – Two of Oglethorpe University’s coaches were
recently awarded with top honors. Oglethorpe University’s men’s golf
coach, Jim Owen, was voted NCAA South District Coach of the Year
(2002). Owen’s Stormy Petrels captured their third consecutive SCAC
championship this year and have been nationally ranked all season.
Oglethorpe senior Robert Fink was honored as Academic All-American.
Junior Chris Summers and sophomore Trent Erb were selected to the
All-District Team. In the NCAA Division III Championship held May 13
- 16, Oglethorpe University had its best finish in three trips.
After a 16th place finish in 1998, and a 13th place finish last
season, the Petrels made their best showing with a ninth place
finish at this year's championships. Oglethorpe shot a final round
312 to finish the tournament at +114 - tied with Wesley College and
Central (Iowa) College.
Golfers also Receive Top Honors
The golf coach was not the only recipient of an award this year.
Oglethorpe University’s head baseball coach, Bill Popp, was awarded
with Coach-of-the-Year honors in voting by the Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference head coaches. Popp, in his ninth season as the
Petrels’ coach, led his squad to the top of the SCAC Eastern
Division with an 8-4 conference mark, 19-19 overall. Oglethorpe has
qualified for the SCAC tournament seven times during Popp’s tenure.
Providing a superior education in the liberal arts, Oglethorpe
University is located in the heart of Brookhaven, just north of
Buckhead. The university is a highly selective, independent,
co-educational institution that enrolls approximately 1,200 students
each year. Oglethorpe’s students represent the best of their
graduating classes, with an average GPA above 3.6, and average SAT
above 1,200. Following graduation, students often go on to the best
graduate schools in the nation. Recent placements include Cambridge
University, Columbia University, Duke University, Harvard
University, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University and Yale
University.
