Sally Sears to Moderate Discussion of Women in
Religious Leadership Roles
Atlanta – The Oglethorpe Women’s Network presents “The
Stained Glass Ceiling: Conversations with Women in Contemporary
Religious Leadership” on January 14, 2003, at 7 p.m. in Oglethorpe
University Museum of Art. Admission is free, call 404-364-8452 for
details.
The evening will begin with a brief historical overview of women
in religious communities by Barbara Patterson, senior lecturer in
the department of religion at Emory University. Sally Sears of WSB-TV
will then moderate an informal panel discussion that will include
three distinct religious leaders in Atlanta.
The panel, which will include Sister Denise, a Buddhist nun of
Nipponzan Myohoji, Reverend E. Claiborne Jones of The Church of the
Epiphany, and Reverend Lisa Rhodes, dean of Sisters Chapel of
Spelman College, will discuss issues, thoughts, views and personal
experiences as it relates to women in contemporary religious
leadership. There will also be a question and answer session at the
end of the program.
“Women have historically been very active in parishes, but much
less active in leadership roles,” said Lee Wilder, event organizer
and co-founder of Oglethorpe Women’s Network. “Within the last 25
years, women have come a long way in parishes, but are still
underrepresented.”
Formed in 2001, The Oglethorpe Women’s Network is composed of
selected Oglethorpe faculty, staff, and community volunteers who are
interested in exploring issues of concern to women. Their last
event, “Hear My Story: The Untold Stories of Women in the Civil
Rights Movement,” drew over 300 participants.
