Oglethorpe Awards James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarships; Five Students to Receive "Full Ride"

Atlanta – The 18th Annual James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship Competition was held at Oglethorpe University on Saturday, January 25, 2003.

Oglethorpe's James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship provides tuition, room and board for four years of undergraduate study. Recipients are selected on the basis of an academic competition held on campus in January of each year. Students must have a combined SAT score of at least 1360 (ACT 31), a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA, and a superior record of leadership in extracurricular activities either in school or in the community.

This year, 83 competitors from 14 states participated in the daylong event. For more than a decade, the James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship Competition has brought together an extraordinary group of talented young scholars to interact with an exceptional core group of Oglethorpe’s teaching faculty. While the outcome of this academic competition centers around the awarding of scholarships, participants also get an insider view of what takes place routinely in an Oglethorpe classroom. Twice during the day, competitors work in small groups with two faculty members in a seminar-style exploration of a given topic. Competitors leave with excellent first-hand knowledge of academic instruction at Oglethorpe, along with exceptional opportunities for funding their college education. At then end of the day, five winners are chosen from the top five scores (one set of scores from the morning discussion, one from the afternoon session and the last set of scores from the writing).

The five winners are named James Edward Oglethorpe Scholars. They each receive full tuition, room and board scholarships worth at this time to be more than $100,000. The other competitors that do well in the competition are named Presidential Scholars and receive $77,000 for four years of study. The winners are notified by telephone the next day by the Director of Admission and admission staff members.

This year's James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship Recipients are:

  • Andrea Wood, daughter of Christopher and Barbara Wood, is a senior at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, GA.

  • James Sutherland, son of James and Laura Sutherland, is a senior at Pace Academy in Atlanta, GA.
