Oglethorpe Wins SCAC Golf Championship,
Southern Golf Association Honors Erb
Atlanta – Oglethorpe University Men’s Golf Team won its fourth
straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Association (SCAC)
Championship on April 27 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Despite wet conditions, Oglethorpe set out to an early round lead
of 11 strokes over second place Trinity University and 12 strokes
over eventual runner up Rhodes College by posting a 299 on Saturday.
The second day saw Oglethorpe increase their lead by breaking their
own SCAC second round scoring record set in 2001 with a round of one
over par, 289. The round gave Oglethorpe a final two-day total of
588, 25 strokes better than second place Rhodes. The Petrels fell
two strokes short of the SCAC scoring record two-day total of 586
set in 1970 at Sewanee Golf Club.
Less than a week after leading his team to the 2003 SCAC Golf
Championship, earning SCAC Golfer-of-the-Year honors, and breaking a
39-year old conference record with a two-day score of 141 at the
2003 SCAC Men's Golf Championships, Oglethorpe University junior
Trent Erb was named as one of two honorable mention honorees for
National Amateur of the Month for April by the Southern Golf
Association. University of Arizona senior Ricky Barnes was named
National Amateur of the Month following his sensational play at the
Masters. The SGA stages the prestigious, 100-year-old Southern
Amateur, scheduled this year at The Homestead in Hot Springs,
Virginia. University of Florida freshman Brett Stegmaier was also
named honorable mention for the month of April, along with Erb.
