Free Workshops on College Admission Process at
Oglethorpe University
Atlanta – This summer Oglethorpe University will host two
full-day interactive workshops designed to help college-bound
students and their families understand the process of applying (and
getting accepted) to the college of their choice. Called Intro to
College, the free workshops (which are co-sponsored by the Offices
of Admission and Student Affairs) are open to all families,
regardless of their interest in Oglethorpe. The workshops will take
place on June 20 and July 18 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Lupton Hall
Auditorium. The programs focus on the entire college selection and
admission process, and can be of help whether students are looking
to stay close to home or go to college on the other side of the
country.
“High school students tend to be really intimidated by admission
officers,” says Barbara Henry, Oglethorpe’s director of admission.
“In their eyes, we’re the ones that have all of the authority. We
bar the door; we hold the purse-strings. But in actuality, most
applicants have far more power to control the outcome of the college
process than they realize.”
To educate high school students and families, Henry and her
staff, along with Oglethorpe’s Assistant Director of Admission Jason
Hamilton, decided to sponsor the Intro to College workshops. “We’re
in a position to be able to help students steer clear of pitfalls as
they apply to college,” says Hamilton. “We know the right questions
to ask, the right way to put together an application, the right way
to play the financial aid game. Why not share this knowledge with
high school kids?”
Even if a student has had an older sibling or friend who’s
already gone through the college quest process, it is important to
recognize that every applicant has different needs. “What worked
for your big brother may lead you toward ill-fitting decisions,”
says Henry. “The college admissions landscape is always changing,
and people like us are very up-to-date about approaches for
success.”
Intro to College features several lively, interactive sessions
for families:
- a session on targeting and courting types of
colleges, led by a professional college counselor;
- a “behind-the-scenes” campus tour,
indicating what to look for and what to ask when touring other
institutions;
- a mock admission committee meeting, exposing
how applicants are chosen for acceptance;
- a focused financial aid and scholarship
seminar;
- a chance to learn more about Oglethorpe
University and the liberal arts philosophy;
- and much more!
Guests will also be given the option to stay on campus for a free
picnic dinner and a discounted performance of “Much Ado About
Nothing,” presented by the Georgia Shakespeare Festival.
