Nick Receives Lexus Leader of the Arts Award for June

Atlanta – Lloyd Nick, director of Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, has been named June’s Lexus Leader of the Arts. The award is a monthly series of vignettes recognizing Atlanta’s cultural leaders. Nick is recognized for his initiative in bringing nationally and internationally acclaimed fine art exhibitions to the museum.

Since 1984, when Nick founded the museum, he has originated and curated 47 exhibitions which are accompanied by lecturers and cultural programs from all over the world. He has developed the museum as a major venue for displaying Asian art and culture, especially Tibetan and Japanese art. During the 1996 Olympics, he brought the personal collection of the Dalai Lama, along with a personal visit from the Dalai Lama in 1998, to Atlanta and was responsible for the exhibition traveling across the country for six years.

Nick is trained and continues to serve as an artist and his paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and in Monaco, Slovenia, Germany and Bulgaria. Nick received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hunter College (CUNY) and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and has won national competitions to study at Yale University and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has been honored by several institutions, including the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In association with the Atlanta Area Lexus Dealers, Public Broadcasting Atlanta established the Lexus Leader of the Arts award in 1999. The Lexus dealers of Atlanta were committed to providing underwriting revenue for WABE and WPBA, the radio and television stations that comprise Public Broadcasting Atlanta, and extended that commitment to recognizing figures in our community whose exemplary dedication to the arts has enriched the cultural life of metropolitan Atlanta. The first award in January, 1999 went to Kenny Leon and Elton John, for their collaboration in the production of “Aida” at the Alliance Theatre, which then moved to its Broadway success. An award recipient is chosen monthly by a nominating committee on the basis of leadership, character, commitment and accomplishment. Lexus Leaders are selected from the artistic disciplines of music, theatre, visual arts, and dance. To date, 53 Atlantans have been honored by Public Broadcasting Atlanta as Lexus Leaders of the Arts.
