Oglethorpe University Singers and Chorale to Present Fall Concert

What: The Oglethorpe University Singers and University Chorale will present their Fall Concert. Dr. W. Irwin Ray Jr., director of musical activities at Oglethorpe, will conduct the concert, featuring a wind ensemble from the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra, Miriam White as pianist and Oglethorpe student soloists Danielle Carlson, Kathryn Cofield, Virginia Brown and James McClary. Student accompanists will be Aaron Whitworth and Rebecca Puckett.

When:  Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m.

Where: Conant Performing Arts Center

Featuring: The concert will include a variety of choral music genres and composers across the ages.  A particular highlight features a performance of three Nocturnes by W. A. Mozart sung in the original Italian.

Additional selections: There also will be selections by Palestrina, Handel, Thomas Morley, John Wilbye and George Gershwin.  The University Singers will perform a Russian Yiddish folk song, a Pennsylvania “Dutch” song text and two well-loved Irish folk songs. Among the Chorale’s selections will be a madrigal from the 16th century that requires switching rapidly between very old Spanish, French and Italian languages and a southern folk song performed in “barbershop harmony.”

The Conant Performing Arts Center is located at Oglethorpe University at 4484 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta. Admission is free. Call 404-364-8329 for more information.
