Oglethorpe University Singers and Chorale to Present Fall
Concert
What: The Oglethorpe University Singers and University
Chorale will present their Fall Concert. Dr. W. Irwin Ray Jr.,
director of musical activities at Oglethorpe, will conduct the
concert, featuring a wind ensemble from the DeKalb Symphony
Orchestra, Miriam White as pianist and Oglethorpe student soloists
Danielle Carlson, Kathryn Cofield, Virginia Brown and James McClary.
Student accompanists will be Aaron Whitworth and Rebecca Puckett.
When:
Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m.
Where:
Conant Performing Arts Center
Featuring: The concert will include a variety of
choral music genres and composers across the ages. A
particular highlight features a performance of three
Nocturnes by W. A. Mozart sung in the original Italian.
Additional selections: There also will be selections
by Palestrina, Handel, Thomas Morley, John Wilbye and
George Gershwin. The University Singers will perform a
Russian Yiddish folk song, a Pennsylvania “Dutch” song
text and two well-loved Irish folk songs. Among the
Chorale’s selections will be a madrigal from the 16th
century that requires switching rapidly between very old
Spanish, French and Italian languages and a southern
folk song performed in “barbershop harmony.”
