Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
to Present Lecture
Thomas J.J. Altizer to speak Nov. 20
ATLANTA – The Oglethorpe University Museum of
Art will present Thomas J. J. Altizer’s lecture entitled "A Radical
Christian Theological Response to Kyoto School Philosophers" on Nov.
20 at 7:30 p.m. in the museum's Skylight Gallery. Altizer was
formerly a professor of religion at Emory University and is retired
from his professorship at the State University of New York at Stony
Brook. He is the author of numerous books including "The
Contemporary Jesus" and "Godhead and the Nothing."
In
formulating his radical theological views, Altizer has engaged in
dialogue with Eastern religious thought in general, and with
Buddhism in particular. He has been influenced by, and influenced,
members of the Japanese Kyoto School of Philosophy, most notably Abe
Masao. Altizer draws close parallels between Buddhist nothingness
and the Christian notion of divine kenosis.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For
more information, call (404) 364-8555 or visit
